Actually, the original SunOS was based on
BSD. Then Sun switched to SYSV (to be more
businesslike I guess; we mustn't have code
written by a bunch of longhair, free love,
flower power hippies whilst on LSD listening
to the Dead running in REAL business applications)
and dubbed it "Solaris." A lot of SunOS
people didn't appreciate the so-called
"benefits" of Slowaris, and either didn't
"upgrade," or they simply switched to
NetBSD and kept truckin'.
Anyway, in Solaris, the GOOD versions of
Unix commands are located in the /usr/ucb
(University of California, Berkeley)
hierarchy.
Also, FreeBSD is optimized for the i386
architecture. NetBSD and OpenBSD are
architecture-neutral, and will bootstrap
on your Ron Popiel Rotisserie(TM) if given
the opportunity, so you have to keep a
close eye on them.
