I've messed with this a while back too and I remember seeing a list of machines in the workgroup/domain. I can't remember if that's because I was connecting to a domain controller. In a workgroup setting the master browser changes to another machine if the master browser is reset. I have no idea which one the master browser is though.. I tried leaving the name off and specifying a work group on the command line with -W. No go's.

It's been a while, but I think if you leave of the computer name, or
name the domain controller or workgroup (see, fuzzy in there)
smbclient will list the names of the boxen it knows about/can find.
