if you check out the /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysqld ... the way it launches the
mysql daemon server is...
/usr/bin/safe_mysqld --user=mysql --log=/var/log/mysqld.log \
--pid-file=/var/run/mysqld.pid >/dev/null 2>&1 &
