For me, it's not the ugliness. I simply fail to understand
what, exactly, GNOME or KDE are supposed to actually do for
me.
I use Window Maker with a few icons on the desktop to launch
frequently-used programs, and I can switch virtual desktops
via <ALT>+<1>, <ALT>+<2>, ..., <ALT>+<0>.
I've installed Helix GNOME, and it is cool (the Star Trek(R)
door-like psssst sound when you hide/unhide the panel is
groovy), but at the end of the day, what does GNOME actually
*DO* for me, other than burn cycles on my CPU?
