Subject: Credentials (was: This is Crazy!...)
Brainbench.com, Hawke. It may not be a prestigious certification, but
I've taken a lot of their tests. They aren't always a cakewalk (though
some of the subjects tested seem like no-brainers at times). The tests
are free (ad supported) and you get a certificate when you complete it.
Being free, Brainbench did tend to pick some pretty good questions.
After all, unlike other certification programs, this one has no backer
that has a vested interest in getting as many of its certifications out
there as it can.

I hold NT4 S/WS, W98, W95, Red Hat, Linux (yes, two distinct Linux
tests), IIS, MS-SQL, HTML, ASP, C, C++, Javascript, and Unix
certifications from them (and at least a few others I can't recall right
now). Like certain "other" certifications, they show more an ability to
function within a given area effectively. Though if you prove your
knowledge thoroughly (i.e. score high enough) you earn a "master"
certification (I got that in [flame retardant underwear... check]
Windows 95).
