need a tweak

I need some recommendations here. Every time I try playing my mp3's I have
to not do anything else or it starts chopping up. I have ample RAM, an 8 MB
video card, and a voodoo card(don't know if it's being used or not) in the
mix as well. Any help would be mas appreciated.
