What do you mean by "external ethernet card"?

On the contrary, I've had no problems what so ever. I've used dhcpcd and I
think pump. One important thing you must specify in the configuration of
whatever dhcp client you use is the cox hostname. It is something like
"cx999999-a".

I can give you more specific information when I get in front of my home
machine.
