scanners

Has anyone successfully gotten a scanner to work? How about a USB scanner? I
am going to have to buy a USB PCI card for my computer in order to plug mine
in, but before I do I want to see what the success rate's been. I've been
harassing HP tech support(I bought a HP ScanJet 3300) about it, and their
first response was that Linux users build their own drivers, so they're not
much help either.
