Oggetto: no DSL in fiber-only neighborhoods?

I have a friend who lives in a neighborhood that has only fiber, not
copper. He says he can't get any sort of Internet access over the lines
aside from 56K dialup. Anybody know any alternatives? (Aside from
cable and Speedchoice.)
