html mail

would anyone care to share the knowledge of how to includes say the infamous
1by1.gif within an e-mail so you know what IP address and when they got the
mail?

for example...I have just such a file...

http://mail.azapple.com/1by1.gif but even if I add the
<a href="http://mail.azapple.com>test</a> it won't automatically get there.
