That will not work if you have one of the newer modems. If you do not renew
your DHCP lease periodically, the modem will stop letting you transmit
through it, even if your static routing configuration is correct. I suspect
it's supposed to be a security feature.

If you have windows, boot and let it solve dhcp, then write down the
info and transfer it to the real os as a static setup. YMMV,
particularly if cox starts using the 'D' part of 'dhcp'.
