firewall in linux help

Hi..I'm new here..

I've read articles on spurious persons
sneaking into people's computers and
monkeying around with them. Even getting
into Linux. Is there a way to stop this?

We have a dsl router hooked to a network hub with 3 computers hooked to the hub.
