java question

I am having the darndest time having .jar files open in the import
statement in java. I just downloaded the JavaMail and its corresponding
activation.jar file and put them in my $CLASSPATH directory, but it
still seems as though it can't/won't open them or reference them
correctly. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I'm only trying to javac
the examples.
