AOL Instant Messaging in Linux

What kind of "Instant Messaging" do you want to use? There are Linux
clients available for ICQ, Yahoo, AIM, and a few others. As for getting a
beep every time a new e-mail arrives, you might want to take a look at
biff or xbiff.
