xbmc crashes upon start-help troubleshoot

well this is interesting..... I was going to run the one that I knew (fsck)
and I tried to open a tty (cntrl-alt-F1-F8) and in pressing cntrl-alt-F1
everything blanked out and I couldn't reopen the GUI.
