Firefox v20 has just become very slow.

Joe,
No, Firefox is not "now a victim of bloatware." Something is wrong
with your configuration or system somewhere. See if you can debug it
with strace.

I've had Firefox start slowly when there was a bad entry in
/etc/resolv.conf, but it sounds like you might have a messed up
Firefox config.
