Questions about Kubuntu 12.04 and its updates

The only thing I can tell you is to play with the system settings, install the full installation of KDE (kubuntu only installs a sub-set by default), and look at things like kde-look.org for add-ons and themes.  

You should also install the msttcorefonts and set the default font to Arial as it looks much better than the sans serif font Kubuntu uses normally.

Thanks Lee. Your reply is very helpful.

It is incomprehensible why project coordinators fail to realize that
forcing *any* non-essential code-monkey tinkering on users is detrimental.

Shouldn't it be obvious that any new thing that is not absolutely essential
should be an option and never a default.

Do you have or know of any list of clean-up steps one can take to "beat
into submission" all the needless, foolish garbage?

Thanks to your affirmation, I am going ahead with the kubuntu updates (yet
with a bit of battle-worn trepidation).
