partimage/clonezilla are intelligent enough to look at the filesystem and only
copy the blocks that are actually in use.  dd copies everything.  So if the
NTFS/FAT/whatever disk is <= 95% full, it'll probably be faster to use a
smarter program, and the image file will be smaller.  If the filesystem on the
disk isn't a commonly-used one, though, you may be stuck with dd.
