56k ext modem

56K modems are not just for cottages. I have a friend who told me about
grabbing up all the older slower modems that he could, to use in Africa.
It turns out that in some parts of third world infrastructure, the older
modems have more resilience and better error handling. I guess that the
price is right too, if you want lots of redundancy.

Remember the CompuCom 14400? They used their own protocol if I remember
right. It was the cat's meow.... for about 6 months :-( Then I heard the
owner died... end of company.

I STILL have MY USR Courier V.Everything 56k. To this day, they are
still $250+ new and mine is MINT.
I keep it... just in case.
