It just occurred to me that if you are using one of the standard bland
wallpapers and had turned on some kind of assistive technology magnifier
(even accidently) you might not be able to tell if you had zoomed in enough
that none of the panels or desktop icons were showing.  Unlikely, but ...

Try using a photo or something as wallpaper and you would be able to see.
