Can Firefox be updated without affecting the rest of my system?

There's always a risk. Murphy demands it. ;)

I think I'd try a Mandriva list and see if someone there is running a 
newer Firefox with your OS version.

At some point, it'll behoove you to figure out how to upgrade your OS 
though.
