Note to self:
[1]  freenode seems to block mibbit;  (so) use this:
http://webchat.freenode.net/ instead
[2]  (for some reason, for me at least), the above works OK with Firefox,
but not with Chrome.  (why?  Java plugin?  hmmm...)
