DOOM engine for modern Linux systems?

Looks pretty retro to me hah
I was talking about a library that's available which can take all
graphics and convert them to direct ascii graphics!  I've played with
it a couple of times back when telnet was the only way to connect to
my home machine (before ssh) to test the speed of my 56k modem.
I think it was called aalib... yeah, just looked it up.
