Partly OT? How to get past lost administrative password

As John mentioned, if it a BIOS password, you need to take the laptop apart. If it is a windows password, try booting into safe mode, then select administrator to boot in. If there is no password, great. It will also list the users, try all of them. If this doenst work, the only other option is to remove the hard drive, connect to another windows box, take "ownership" of the drive...... Once this is completed, you have a better chance of cracking the password. Google for windows password | read as many result you can till you find what you need.

It sounds like there is a BIOS password. If that's the case then you'll have 
to clear the BIOS CMOS memory. He'll have to look on Dell's support website 
for how to do it for his specific model as the procedure can be different 
from computer to computer. Normally it requires opening the case and moving a 
jumper so you need to take standard static electricity precautions.
