Though you and I (and probably many, many others) see this behavior as
undesirable, I don't think it qualifies as evil. Stupid or vain might be
better choices. It's similar to Firefox defaulting to save downloads to
the desktop (because that's how Ben Goodger (sp?) does things). I
*never* want things saved to my desktop. Ever. But Firefox at least has
an option to change the behavior to be more sane.  I'm not sure, but
maybe gmail has a setting that can be tweaked so that it acts more
rationally, and not just the way that one guy on the gmail team likes to
do things.
