I think this conversation has reached it's natural end, but I just
wanted to say that I haven't seen anything really good on this.  Nothing
I'd link to.  In general though, the people who have tried seem to
always conclude that it is an "it depends" type of answer.  I've never
seen a clear winner.

But, just to plug my own projects, I'm sponsoring a senior project in
the fall to compress SVG.  Not just GZip, but actually look at
duplication allowed in the file format to reduce the size.  Also, remove
unneeded precision of numbers, stuff like that.  I'm very excited about
it.
