How to change Firefox file opening defaults?

I agree,  FF has had lots of problems with opening pdf docs.  sometimes
it remembers the last app I chose to open them.  other times it does not
remember but still opens with it. other times it gives an error even
though it seems like the time that worked.  It's probably passing the
pdf off to kde and things aren't always working.

Seems like I researched this before and I think you can delete/rename
your mimeTypes.rdf file to fix some of the problems.  but YMMV.

Right now, when I go to the mime/helper apps in the preferences all the
buttons are greyed out.  I can't set anything within ff to handle file
types with that interface.
