root user and any GUI

that's fine but you may want to switch distros then.  ubuntu is using
the sudo model and it just takes work to change the way things are done.
 sure you can do it but it's a little bit of a pain.  You almost need to
go through the entire system and un sudo all the apps.

Generally this is not as much of an issue if you use xhost + (since
+root@ doesn't work ) and just run the app you need as root.  Tab
completion can help.  gnome\t\t\t will show you things like
gnome-control and k\t\t\t will show you kcontrol etc.

I came from Debian using root all the time.  It took a little getting
used to sudo but I don't run gui apps as root very often and when I do I
 always know the app I want.  For system configs ubuntu has setup sudo
on everything so root may not even work properly in some cases.
