I dont remember if it comes out of the  box.  I think firefox links to
gtk libraries so it's probably there.  But I'm mainly concerned that he
uses the kubuntu methods first and only uses ubuntu/gnome stuff if the
first approach does not work.  It's just better practice to stick with
what's installed out of the box.

Adept has a repository section where you can simply click on them to
enable or disable.   It's much easier to use than synaptics repo manager
IMHO.  It's under File->Manage Repositories.

If he needs something not in main he can find the line for universe and
multiverse and simply click on it to turn it from gray to black.
