I used to leave the wired interface active, and the wireless not active. 
Then, if the there is no wired, I'd activate the wireless.

More recently, I discovered the "Location" drop-down list on the Network 
Settings (System->Administration->Networking) window (Ubuntu). The 
Location setting allows you to store separate network profiles for 
various locations. That seems to work nicely, but you still have to 
select your location manually after the machine has booted. It'd be nice 
to have a boot option which would let you select your location at boot 
time. I'm sure there's a way to do that, but haven't delved into it.

Looks like the "network-manager" package that hans mentioned is what we 
really need. I'm going to install it and check it out.
