oh wait, I forgot to give you the error message ifupdown has been giving me. 
It will help!

bmike1 at 2[bmike1]$ sudo ifup eth0

bmike1 at 2[bmike1]$ sudo ifup /dev/eth0
/etc/network/interfaces:34: duplicate interface
ifup: couldn't read interfaces file "/etc/network/interfaces"
bmike1 at 2[bmike1]$ sudo ifdown /dev/eth0
/etc/network/interfaces:34: duplicate interface
ifdown: couldn't read interfaces file "/etc/network/interfaces"
bmike1 at 2[bmike1]$ sudo ifdown eth0
/etc/network/interfaces:34: duplicate interface
ifdown: couldn't read interfaces file "/etc/network/interfaces"
