Any way to change video card drivers in text mode with Suse 9.3?

Ok, here goes, I'm logging in as root and booting yast2. I go to 
hardware > graphics > change... and my monitor disconnects. Aren't I 
supposed to change something?  I think I'm supposed to see a screen 
instead of a blank screen with my monitor connection light blinking.
