I actually have a similar HP zv5440. I've tried many
distros on it and they generally give about 85-90% of
the hardware supported out of the box.

don't have to constantly update if you just get the
critical stuff. I personally update every couple days,
but that's probably far more than necessary.

Mepis found and configured my wifi for the broadcom
using ndiswrapper. All the others took work. I'm
currently using Fedora Core 4.

Suse, Mandriva, and Ubuntu are all pretty good on the
laptop; Fedora also works well for me.

There is a list for linux on the r3000/z5000 laptop;
some people on there also use the z6000.
