Actually, I only saw the "at home" part.  Skimmed the OP's message,
didn't read it all - my bad.

My assumption is that most machines used at home are going to be used
for learning and tinkering more than mission critical stuff.  If that is
the case, I would install X and friends.  If it is really a server, than
bypass X.
