Multiple OSes, 1 Mozilla profile?

Boy - I really hate top posting but I just can't put my reply on the
bottom on this one.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend roaming profiles as Liberty is
suggesting - at least not right away because there are a lot of
considerations for using roaming profiles that I'm not gonna start
getting into here.

This is an excellent project for learning all the system administration
disciplines and it puts an older box to great use.

I should probably write something up definitively but I don't have the
time at the moment. Anyway...

Start with any distro that you feel comfortable with. GUI/Xwindows
should be unnecessary - it isn't needed for a server and if you need the
crutches of GUI type admin software, learn to love webmin.

Make sure that you install an imap daemon, create the user(s) &
passwords. Start the imap daemon.

On the email client on your computer(s) - (one computer at a time), set
it up to use this server as your server, using imap (NOT POP3).

Transfer your email to the server by dragging it over
(Netscape/Mozilla/Evolution/Kmail/???

On your server, you should set up fetchmail to retrieve your email
manually until you get it working, then on a scheduled basis.

Anyway, for shared mail services your server should have the following
installed on it.

- fetchmail
- procmail
- imap

- a reliable hard drive and a fast (100TX) NIC card are heavily
recommended.

other niceties:
- webmin (administration)
- ssh (administration)
- mirrored hard drive (software mirrors are good too)

other services:
- dns (allows you to have mini-domain name resolution)
- dhcp (issues TCP/IP configuration to computers automatically)
- samba (windows file & print services)
- netatalk (Macintosh file & print services)
- lpd shared printer setups
