SuSE prop w/ new kernel

moin, moin,

OK, installed SuSE 8.0 for some testing here at work. Specifically trying to
test some of their kernels.

Install went fine. They have a nice installer.

Booted fine. Worked. Duh, it's GNU/Linux :).

Tried to install a new kernel, but it got bitchy about replacing
k_deflt-blah.blah with k_i386-blah.blah or any other k_<arch>. That was
annoying. Don't replace it, rather make the old kernel the backup kernel.
Sure they've got the failsafe in place, but if the new kernel doesn't work,
I want the old kernel in place.

Speaking of the new kernel not working...

Can't load root fs on 03:01. OK, tried the failsafe. Ooops. Same problem. Hmm,
they have memtest86 on there by default ( a cool thing ), so I tried that.
Hey, that works. Doesn't boot the OS, though, just runs memory tests.
memtest86 doesn't use an initrd, but the other two do. Hmmm...

OK, booted from the install CD and used the rescue option. Reran lilo. Still
kernel panic on boot. Tried "lilo -r /mnt" and "lilo -C /mnt/etc/lilo.conf".
No worky. Also tried "rescue root=/dev/hda1", but that still went to the
rescue root fs rather than the rescue kernel on the disk root fs.

SuSE defaulted to reiserfs.

Hmm. "VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem)."

After that come a bunch of notices about not being able to load the modules
that are supposed to be inserted at boot-time.

Finally, "fatfs: bogus logical sector size 5632" shows up twice before the
panic.

I booted it several times with the original install kernel, so it was
working prior to installing the new kernel. Don't know if the failsafe mode
had been working.

I verified that /etc/fstab lists root on /dev/hda1 as reiserfs. Nothing
about fs type in lilo.

My standard solution of installing Debian won't work because I'm
specifically testing SuSE :).

Anybody know how to get this working?

ciao,
