eth0 not working [Resent after 8hrs]

Forgive me if this sounds like a stupid question but...

You've compiled a kernel using the Live CDs config file and eth0 doesn't
work. However, eth0 works from the Live CD. What do you get when you run
`ifconfig`?

I'm not familiar with gentoo but is sounds like a "roll your own"
distro. Is it possible you're missing something not related to the
kernel config?
