I don't know that you could do it on a different desktop or screen, but
you could in theory run another X server, I don't know if they would
share a video card though - so you'd be back in the same place you were.

But let me ask a different question: Why two window managers?  If you
are using GNOME you could just have another set of menu items that
instead of being "eog" (Eye of GNOME) would be "ssh myothermachine eog"
and then all the programs would be run remotely.  If you set up the
.rhosts (security warnings included with .rhosts, if you don't know
them, ask or look them up first) file so that the machines are trusted
and no password is required.  There may be a little bit of grunt work
involved to start out, but it might be nicer in the long run.
