Recording mpg's

You are off by a bit.  NTSC resolution appears to be 768x494, 30fps (60Hz
Interlaced images).

PAL (which is NOT used in the States) is 720x576, 25fps (50Hz Interlaced
Images).

What is visible on the TV screen is about 768x450 under NTSC.  The other 44
lines are above and below the frame surrounding your TV set and are usually used
to hold things like Closed Captions and other hidden information (like text
telling the TV station to where start and stop ads).
