actually this doesn't solve my problem - I try to leave out details that I
think aren't important and yes, /boot/grub/menu.lst is a static link
to /boot/grub/grub.conf so it hardly seems important.

[root@server samba]# ls -l /boot/grub
total 239
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 101 May 6 11:55 device.map
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 10848 May 8 10:50 e2fs_stage1_5
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 9744 May 8 10:50 fat_stage1_5
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 8864 May 8 10:50 ffs_stage1_5
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 655 May 8 10:13 grub.conf
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           11 May  6 11:55 menu.lst -> ./grub.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 9248 May 8 10:50 minix_stage1_5
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 12512 May 8 10:50 reiserfs_stage1_5
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 54044 Sep 5 2001 splash.xpm.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 512 May 8 10:50 stage1
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 120000 May 8 10:50 stage2
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 8512 May 8 10:50 vstafs_stage1_5

and when I did as you suggested ...

grub --config-file=/boot/grub/grub.conf (or for that matter menu.lst), it
leaves me at the grub command ...

grub> and I haven't a clue and reading info grub and typing help haven't
brought light to the dark space of my mind to comprehend this.

I wouldn't really care whether it installs boot loader to either hard drive
(right now bios tells it to find the IDE drive first) but of course, /boot and
the / (root) partition are on the SCSI drive (sda or in grub parlance - hd2).

Either way, I haven't been able to find the trick to make it work - I wanted to
rely on webmin's grub module to fix things up but it no workee and I am stumped
by grub's info & help.
