HOW WILL HISTORY VIEW RICHARD STALLMAN?
An interview with Sam Williams,
author of O'Reilly's new book "Free as in Freedom"
by Bruce Stewart
"Free as in Freedom" traces Richard Stallman's evolution from gifted,
solitary child to teen outcast to revered and reviled crusader. As the
leader of the free software movement, Stallman is one of the most
influential and controversial personalities in hacker culture today.
Through extensive interviews with Stallman, his family, and fellow
hackers, author Sam Williams has created an intimate portrait of this
freedom fighter.

LOCAL RULES: OF ANTS AND IP ROUTING
by Ravi Malhotra, author of "IP Routing"
Watching a line of ants work its way along his roof deck, Ravi Malhotra
noticed the ants were quick to find the shortest route between two
points or around a sudden obstacle. How do they do it? By using local
rules, the same way IP routers bump traffic around the Internet.

STOP THE COPYING, START A MEDIA REVOLUTION
Andy Oram has a plan to wrest control of the media.
"The movie and music studios are tightening their grip on the Internet.
Their tools are lawsuits, laws such as the Digital Millennium Copyright
Act (DMCA) and the even more constricting Security Systems Standards
and Certification Act (SSSCA) that is now in the House, and a general
atmosphere of intimidation."

A PRESSPLAY TEST DRIVE
by Steve McCannell
With the ability to burn CDs and download tracks, can the record label's
new services win over the Napster crowd? We took a look at Pressplay to
see if they've made it easier to pay for tracks instead of pirate
them.

FREE AS IN FREEDOM
Order Number: 2874
"Free as in Freedom" interweaves biographical snapshots of GNU project
founder Richard Stallman with the political, social and economic
history of the free software movement. "Free as in Freedom" looks at how
the latest twists and turns in the software marketplace have done
little to throw Stallman off his pedestal. If anything, they have made
his logic-based rhetoric and immovable personality more persuasive.
