response to the original sender (Kevin Buettner).

There is an evil Reply-To header in PLUG mail. I'll
have to watch that. Mistakes can be be embarrassing.

Meanwhile, in the several minutes since I sent my post,
I've answered one of the two questions I asked for
myself, namely:

I figured out how to do that.

However, I still don't know why it thinks I have a
second desktop.
