I have a 52x on my win 98 machine as does my son. Both are over 2 years
ols and have not ggiven us a bit of trouble.

Anyone used any of those for an extended period? I have a 52Xer
that I picked up at the Boy Scouts flea market a while back, and
it didn't last all that long. I've been shy of the REALLY cheap
ones since, though today's cheapies may well be better quality
than the best of not-too-long-ago.
