Postfix also has the added benefit of using the maildir message storage
format which uses a single file per email message. This method has enourmous
benefits of using the mbox format instead of the antiquated mbox format. I
also agree in avoiding sendmail at all costs.

Postfix can be made to work with ldap easily and has an excellent security
track record. For more information about postfix ldap and see the scalable
webmail howto at http://www.horde.org/papers/Scalable_webmail_HOWTO.php . I
personally prefer squirrelmail over imp for security reasons. If you have
problems feel free to email me, I personally built the packages for our
appliances with postfix-ldap-cyrus-squirrelmail-kitchenSink.
