You probably have either ipchains or iptables already loaded.

Look at the output from lsmod. If you see iptables, then go to step 2. If
you see ipchains see if you can get rid of it. If something is listed as
using it, then those have to go first. Here's an example off one of my
boxen.

bash-2.05$ lsmod
Module                  Size  Used by
es1371                 27056   1
sound                  56384   0 (unused)
soundlow                 384   0 [sound]
soundcore               2464   7 [es1371 sound]
3c59x                  20096   1
sysv                   24416   0 (unused)
unix                   11344 217 (autoclean)

If I want to get rid of soundlow, I first have to drop sound. If I want to
drop soundcore, then I need to get rid of es1371 *and* sound first.
