There is nothing wrong with kmail. Something has changed either at earthlink 
or on your system.  My mail stopped working for a while too when cox made 
some serious changed.  I use to use simply mail for both pop and smtp, and 
then later had to change to mail.mesa1.az.home.com so it is wise to find out 
what your domain name is and find out if earthlink made any changes.  Then 
again earthlink could be experiencing problems,  but like most,  denie.
