Problems with Earthlinks PPP access

I've been on EL for years and just recently have it using Linux. I don't have 
any other scripts running (that I know of).  I've installed Mandrake 7.1 (had 
to get the latest ppp), 7.2 and the latest 8.0. The latter 2 came up without 
any problems.

Of course there' still Samba, cd ripping, and a host of other things I'd like 
to get done!
