Hype driven?  I don't know if you've realized this or not but most mags
are hype driven.  Their job is to sell.  That's why advertisers put big
$$$ in them.  I'm not saying that I turn to Maximum Linux for a technical
reference (HOWTO's and the net are the way to go for me) but Maximum Linux
is more enjoyable to read than a HOWTO and it does have some enlightening
info.  If it's going to attract more people to the Linux community because
of that fact than it's a good thing in my book.  I actually kinda like the
hype.
