glibc sucks...

Well, I've finally gotten fed up enough with the current trend of
refusing to support proper libc5 ELF binaries to go ahead and instal
glibc (version 2.2). Updated all the requirements, everything passed
make and make check went off without a hitch.

make install, on the other hand, dies at the tippy end ... seems
they've included a brand new ldconfig in v2.2 that (drumroll please)
DOESNT WORK! It

"can't stat .2"

I think this means it cant parse filenames, actually. I did a ls -a,
there is no .2 file in there.

The old ldconfig works, or seems to, but ... well, for the first time
EVER since Oct 1998, Apache Server 1.3 is giving me segfaults. Yet, it
continues to function in the exact same manner as it did before in all
other instances (it picks itself back up icely when it segfaults, I
see them in the error_log though.) There have been other problems as
well. X actually crashed once today without the mclk on the video card
being set to the "too aggressive" setting that only works at or below
around 70F ...

And the glibc documentation hints that I ought to have been able to
avoid all this shit simply by installing glibc into /usr/local/glibc
so it wouldnt conflict with my existing setup. NOT. What sucks the
MOST is that I actually need to get this crap working, or
semi-working, because too many people have abandoned libc5 entirely.

Moving from a.out to ELF was far simpler than this.
