What Distro to use

I don't think the distribution matters terribly much for a server box, 
as long as you are careful to get updates where it matters and pay
attention to security issues.  Slackware has a good reputation for 
matching components well.  Red Hat has taken a lot of heat for 7.0,
but it's not all that bad.

What sort of mirroring scheme did you have in mind?  What services will
run besides Samba?
